Dann DeFrank

DJ NAME & WHERE DID IT COME FROM?:Dann D. sorta what I've been called all my life

WHAT STYLE OF MUSIC YOU PLAY:House, Tech-house, Progressive, Beaks Old and New school.

CDJ'S OR VINYL WHAT SET UP DO YOU USE: Im a vinyl junkie, but these days I play digital to include some original material of myself and my entourage.

HOW BIG IS YOUR COLLECTION: I'd have to guess 2,500 records, and twice that on the digital end.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN DJING: I've been DJing since 1992 (damn I'm getting old).

HAVE YOU ALWAYS BEEN MUSICALLY INFLUENCED: Yes, I have always been involved in music production and preformance.  From saxophone, keyboards, guitar, and bass, to the tables and the studio.  Its been a life long journey starting in the late 70's and I see no end to it in the future, it's my one true passion and relase in life.

WHY DID YOU START DJING / INSPIRATION, WHAT GAVE YOU THE INITIAL PUSH: I previously in the early 90's was in a band, we started getting more experiemental and electronic. After buying vynil like junkie and attending some early parties in NYC, and DC I totally got sucked into the energy and still get that rush from making a crowd move...It never get's old.

WHO ARE YOUR FAVOURITE DJ'S:A tough one, I've always loved the early  Jonny L, Joeski from NYC, Scott Henry, my hometown hero and friend Josh Wink, and my buddies the Hardkiss brothers I have been fortunante to play with on several occasions, I suppose I can't leave out Sascha, much respect.

TOP 3 FAVOURITE TUNES OFF ALL TIME: NRG - "I Need Your Lovin" MK featuring Alana - "Always" Jonny L - "Hurt me so"

WHAT WAS THE FIRST TUNE YOU EVER BROUGHT: I forget the artist, it was on the label Fresh Fruit.

OUT OF ALL OF YOUR TUNES, WHICH ONE "NEVER FAILS" : Saint Etienne "Like a Mortuary"

DO YOU PRE PLAN YOUR SETS OR PLAY FOR THE CROWD: I usually plan my intro but feed off the crowd and try to build the energy as I go. It's like a constant flow of energy between me and the crowd.

WHERE HAVE YOU PLAYED: Club Fever - Baltimore, BUZZ - DC, NEWORLD - Philly, Caffiene-NY, and many many warehouse and outlaw parties in the 90s and Early 2000s in Philly, Baltimore, NYC, Washington DC, Indianappolis, Ohio, Detroit, Chicago, Miami, California, and North Carolina.

IF YOU COULD PLAY ANYWHERE WHERE WOULD IT BE:
I'd love to cross the pond and play in Europe. I've imported many DJs but havent toured or played outside of North America......yet.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO UP AND COMING DJS:
Be in it for the right reasons, respect other DJS, network, practice, try new things, and don't expect to make lots of money.  Be humble and get your name out there.

HOW DO YOU SEE THE MUSIC SCENE IN 5 YEARS AND WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN IT: From my perspective here in Philadelphia, I see there is still a demand for the underground house scene, but I see it evolving more and more to a hybrid of old, new and experimental sounds with more of a focus on involving or mutating in to live experiemental bands.I see myself producing, DJing and trying to evolve and try new concepts, while remembering and utilizing my experience and my roots.

ANYTHING ELSE? ANY SHOUTS? ... Big Ups to Trace and Foxxy in the UK.  Josh Wink and Nigel Richards for supporting me as I grew up in the scene here in Philly.  My boy Karl K, philly's original drum and bass artist, THC productions ,Kedrick king of B-more, PAWN Lasers crew, Marcus Parcus, and all that have supported me and help me keep my head in the game.

IF YOU HAD A TIME MACHINE WHAT YEAR  WOULD YOU GO TO AND WHY:
1992 - Spending every Friday at NASA in NYC were some of the best times of my life, the energy and sounds were unprecidented at that time.

IF YOU COULD DO OR BE ANYTHING ELSE WHAT WOULD IT BE:
I also do multimedia development and design, which is what got me into computers and producing.  If i could do ANYTHING - i would chill in the Carribean and make music and go native

WHEN YOU WERE 12 WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GREW UP:
Acutally  I wanted to be a radio DJ, or film maker.

IF I CAME TO YOUR HOUSE AND WENT IN YOUR FRIDGE WHAT WOULD I FIND:
You'd find all organics, soy milk, veggies, probably a few beers.  Nothing with Frutcose Corn Syrup or artificial colors and preservatives.  Our food supply is killing us.

6 ITEMS YOU COULDNT LIVE WITHOUT:

My laptop,
mp3 player,
TV,
my wife,
my thirst for knowledge,
and my Bible

AND FINALLY....... WHY SHOULD WE LISTEN TO YOU PLAY:
i  have many sounds and styles to offer.  I want to interact with my audience, hear your ideas and points of view, and make it a collaborative and energizing show.
